An International Call Center for Nairobi, Kenya
Capitalizing on Kenya's low costs and educated, English language workforce, Evans Research Corporation of Toronto and Skyweb Technologies Ltd. of Nairobi formed a joint venture called Skyweb-Evans Ltd., and signed a contract to provide international call center services for clients in North America, Europe, Australia and other countries around the world, from Nairobi.
The agreement had a substantial training component. The agreement defined the need, to provide 146 jobs for recent post-secondary graduates in Kenya. The joint venture has the potential to grow to 600 jobs over a three-year period as more clients sign on.
Kenya liberalized its telecommunications environment. It deregulated the market to permit competition and legalizing Voice over Internet protocol (VoIP). The result has been a reduction in long distance voice telecommunications costs of 89% over the past year. This is a key factor that now makes Kenya competitive with countries like India and the Philippines and opens up the Kenyan market to explosive growth in international call center business.
